Freelance proofreading

I’m a professional QA proofreader and UCSD-trained copyeditor. I’m based in the United Kingdom and work in both British and American English.

I freelance full-time and enjoy supporting busy in-house teams. My work is about protecting my clients’ reputations for professionalism and attention to detail.

I welcome educational materials, magazines, newsletters, and business communications. I’m also available for specialist documents such as internal reports and applications for funding.

If you need proofreading for a document type not mentioned on this page, please feel free to ask.

My approach to proofreading

I always find out what my client wants for the text. I ask for any relevant instructions and what they don’t want me to do. In all cases, I read the text closely to see if it makes sense, communicates clearly, and is free from production errors.

It’s important that my feedback is useful to my clients. I take care to fit into their processes and preferences.

I call myself a QA proofreader and proofeditor, but my work has several common names. You may know it as proofreading, proofediting, light editing, or quality assurance proofreading. I check the language, content, and presentation of written materials for ambiguities, inconsistencies, and hiccups.

Proofreading and editing experience

My work has tended to focus on publications and documents used in companies, organisations, and education. I have particular experience with:

  • multi-author documents
  • publication-ready layouts (e.g. magazines)
  • writing produced with AI assistance
  • writing by learners of English
  • documents that follow a set template or pattern

I’ve proofread and edited a wide variety of documents, including:

  • sensitive documents sent between organisations
  • academic writing from student to professional level
  • management training courses
  • corporate and charity reports
  • news and feature articles
  • newsletters, magazines, and news publications
  • product data feeds
  • model exam papers
  • blog posts and online writing

My work sometimes involves fact-checking details against other sources and cross-checking within documents.

My editorial training

  • Copyediting certificate – UC San Diego
  • 10-week fiction copyediting course – UC San Diego
  • Essential proofreading course – Publishing Training Centre
